This is the most important midterm election this year!  If that sounds qualified, I’ve just read Matt Yglesias’s reminder that whatever happens, not much will happen.  The Republicans will get a noisier pulpit but probably won’t be able to do anything they really want to do.  I’ve seen contradictory opinions on whether they’ll force a government shutdown or not; popular as that would be with the base, it’s likely to just annoy people.

My prediction is that the Tea Party will get a few setbacks but will overall rejoice loudly, making it even more suicidal for “mainstream” Republicans to face it down.

If you’re in the notorious enthusiasm gap, I do encourage you to go and throw the Tea Party in the harbor.  Leftists are a dispirited bunch these days but it doesn’t advance any progressive or liberal goal to get a Tea Party landslide.
